Two humans, two stories: Esmail and Manar are forced to leave their home in Syria. They get away and finally arrive in the German city of Dortmund. They build themselves new lives there while their families are stuck in an apparently never-ending war.
In “Here” the two young men talk about what it means to say goodbye, to flee to Europe, and settle down in a country that constantly discusses whether foreigners are still welcome.

“Hier (Here)” was created within the Institute for Journalism at TU Dortmund University, Germany. The documentary was filmed in and around Dortmund and produced over the course of two years. After its premiere in November 2018, the film was shown in selected theatres across Germany. Several schools in North Rhine-Westphalia used the film as teaching material.
